Good point. Maybe the leagues of out-of-work newspaper journalists who can't/won't make the leap to the web? :-)

Hey Denise:

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment: "To demystify the process of news/photo collection and selection, and to introduce the public to the human decisions made on a daily basis that control the content of the news, public schools should include in the curriculum courses in media criticism, news standards, theory and ethics."

I took a class kind of like this at SFCC with Dr. Stephen Robitaille when I was working on my A.A. in the Spring 2002. I had been a beat reporter for the Alligator before the class, so I had some sense of what a real newsroom was like.

We talked about a lot of things, including violence and 9/11 coverage, as it was still fresh in everyone's minds. One thing I got out of it was how much everyone in my class really hated the media, while understanding very little about news collection or how media decisions were made. I was very new to academic discussion. But I will never forget that about that class.

The problem is: who should teach this in public schools?
